Photo Booth Fix: 360 subject off-center

Updated November 2026 · 4 min read

When a 360 subject is off-center, either the camera is not aimed at the center of the platform or the guests are not standing on it. Re-center the phone holder so the lens lines up with the arm, put a tape X at the exact center of the platform, and ask every group to start on the X.

One test spin with a team member on the X tells you which problem you have. If they sit off to one side for the whole rotation, it is the camera. If they swing from side to side as the arm travels around, it is where they are standing.

What guests and the attendant see

Guests see themselves slide toward the edge of the frame during the spin, with a shoulder, raised hand or friend clipped at certain angles. Groups of three or four get it worst: the person on the end disappears for part of the rotation.

The attendant sees it in the preview or at the sharing station: the platform center is not the frame center, or the group drifts left and right as the arm goes around.

60-second triage

  1. Place or replace the tape X at the exact center of the platform.
  2. Coach the next group: "Middle person on the X, everyone else close around them."
  3. Check the holder has not slid or twisted after transport or a bump.
  4. Run the next spin and watch the preview.

Likely causes, ranked

  1. Guests standing off the center. The most common cause, especially when groups spread out or drift during their big move.
  2. Holder not aimed at the center. It was mounted crooked or has slipped.
  3. Lens offset. Phone cameras sit in a corner of the phone, so a holder that centers the phone body can leave the lens an inch or more off the arm's line.
  4. Platform not level. A tilted platform tilts the whole circle the camera travels.
  5. Wrong lens. The 1x lens on a typical arm makes small offsets look big; most platforms need the 0.5x ultra-wide.

The full fix, step by step

  1. Find the true center of the platform and mark it with an X in gaffer or colored tape.
  2. Stand a team member on the X with arms raised.
  3. Run one full rotation at event speed and watch the preview or a test video.
  4. Constant offset to one side: adjust the holder so the lens, not the phone body, lines up with the arm's center line, then aim it at the X and lock it.
  5. Side-to-side swing: the person was not on the axis. Check the X is truly centered and that they are standing on it.
  6. Check height and tilt: lens at about 36 to 42 inches above the platform surface, tilted up 5 to 10 degrees. For groups of three or four, raise the lens 2 to 4 inches and use the longest arm setting.
  7. Confirm the 0.5x lens is selected in your app.
  8. Re-test with arms raised: head, hands and feet in frame all the way around. Then test with two people.

Prevent it next event

  • Put the X down at every setup and carry spare tape in the kit.
  • Run the framing test with arms raised for one person, then two, before guests arrive.
  • Mark the holder position on the arm with a small piece of tape so slippage is obvious at a glance.
  • Level the platform with a bubble level, using a plywood board on carpet.
  • Write the final height, tilt and lens on the run sheet so you can repeat them at that venue.
  • Use a branded center decal if you want the mark to look intentional at weddings and brand events.

When to switch to a backup

A holder that will not stay centered is damaged or has a worn clamp. Swap in a spare holder or the backup phone and holder, and replace the broken one after the event.

For videos already recorded off-center, 1080p footage leaves little room to reframe. Clips recorded in 4K for a premium package can be cropped and recentered in editing. Do not hold the line to re-shoot groups; fix the setup and let the next spins be right.

Questions operators ask

Why does the tape X matter so much on a 360?

The camera circles the center of the platform. Anyone standing on that point stays centered for the whole spin, and anyone off it swings toward the edges.

How do I keep a group of four in frame?

Put the middle of the group on the X, ask everyone to stay close, raise the lens 2 to 4 inches and use the longest arm setting. Check the platform's guest limit first.

Can I fix off-center 360 videos after the event?

Footage shot in 4K can be reframed in editing. Standard 1080p booth output has little room to crop, so fixing the setup at the event matters more.

Does the camera need to be in the middle of the phone holder?

The lens does. Line up the lens with the arm's center line, even if that means the phone sits slightly to one side in the holder.
